[Bernhard Beck-Winchatz's Homepage]

Welcome to my homepage! I have been a graduate student at the UW Astronomy Department since 1992. I am a native of Germany, born in Mosbach, where I graduated from the Nikolaus-Kistner-Gymnasium. I received my Vordiplom in physics from the Universität Konstanz and my Diplom in physics from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, where I worked at the Universitäts-Sternwarte. My research while working on my Diplom involved the calculation of model atmospheres for hot stars. While in Munich, I also enjoyed working in the optical lithography group at Siemens and the Semiconductor Group of the university.

As part of my dissertation, I am conducting a survey for ultrafaint quasars in which I use ground-based observations from the Apache Point 3.5-m telescope and the Palomar Observatory 200-inch telescope, as well as space-based observations from the Hubble Space Telescope. My dissertation adviser is Prof. Scott Anderson. I have also collaborated with Prof. Karl-Heinz Böhm and Dr. Alberto Norriega-Crespo on spectroscopic abundance analyses of Herbig-Haro Objects, with Prof. George Wallerstein and Prof. Jeff Brown on metallicities of globular cluster stars, and with Prof. Erika Böhm-Vitense on masses of cepheids.

I also enjoy teaching introductory astronomy courses, such as Astronomy 102 and Astronomy 201, and working on public and educational outreach projects, such as Project ASTRO and Science-by-Mail.

You can take a look at my vitae, research agenda, teaching philosophy, and outreach philosophy.

I am married to Michaela Winchatz, who is an assistant professor in the Speech Communication Department at Southern Illinois University. In my spare time, I enjoy running, mountain biking, snowboarding and skiing, hiking, reading, and working on my 1964 Buick Skylark.

Some of the people I enjoy spending time with (and who happen to have web pages) are Bebbo Pfeiffer, Gerd Beck, Oliver Dannenberger, Gia Khazaradze , John Castle, Kevin McLin, and Laura Manning.
