Student Contributions 06/17/96 to 06/23/96
To get some experience with using search engines, the students were asked to come up with a question which is related to astronomy and use the Alta Vista search engine to find the answer. They then used the mail tool on the Astronomy 201 homepage to send the question, the answer, and the URL of the site they found the answer on to the TA, who then created this web page.
- Chun was wondering whether the top quark has already been discovered. She found out that it has already been discovered and interesting information about the discovery on
this web site and this web site
- Carin wanted to know what blasars are and found that they are are active galaxies with the
axis of the jets pointed toward Earth on this web site
- Carl found that the next solar eclipse will occur on October 12, 1996. It will be a partial
eclipse and can be seen from NE Canada, Greenland, Europe and N Africa.
The next eclipse to be seen from Seattle will occur on March 8, 1997 and
will be a total eclipse. He did not give the URL of the sites where he found this information, so you'll have to search for yourself!
- Eisei wanted to know the first name of Mr. Hyakutake, the amateur astronomer who discovered the comet that was visible from Seattle in March. He found the answer on this site.
- Danette was interested in who Hubble was, the person who gave the Hubble Space Telescope its name. On this site she found that Edwin Hubble showed in 1929 that the different galaxies were moving apart
from each other. The universe was expanding. Scientist until than, had
thought the universe was static.
- Stephanie tried to answer the question: "What future space missions does NASA have planned for
the outer planets of the solar system?" and found information on this topic on
this site
