APO/SPICAM Image of NGC 5371

This true-color image of the majestic spiral galaxy NGC 5371 was obtained with the SPICAM instrument on the APO 3.5m telescope. Located over 125 million light years away in Canes Venatici, this galaxy was the host to a peculiar type II supernova which erupted in late 1994, although the remnant is no longer visible in this picture. Four images through the infrared, red, green, and ultraviolet Sloan Digital Sky Survey filters were combined into this single frame. The size of this field is 4.8 x 4.8 arcminutes.
