Prof. Böhm-Vitense has a variety of interests related to Cepheid variables and stars with anomalous surface abundances. She and her collaborators are examining the orbital properties of Cepheids in binary systems in ordser to estimate their masses and ages. From this information, the degree of mixing in main sequence stars with masses around 5 solar masses can be estimated. Prof. Vitense is also investingating the errors involved in using Cepheids for extragalactic distance measurements if their chemical abundances are not measured independently. She hopes to determine if the abundances of Cepheids can be inferred from their broad-band colors. Finally, she is studying barium and CH-rich stars using the Hubble Space Telescope to detect and study white-dwarf companions which are suspected of having caused the strange surface chemical enrichments in these stars.
