The Graduate Program: General Exams

General Exams are 40 - 50 minute talks given by graduate students on a topic related to their thesis. After completing a general exam, a graduate student becomes an official PhD candidate in the department. These talks are comprehensive and geared toward an audience with a general knowledge of astronomy. As such, they are great references when reviewing a topic or studying for an exam. Below, we have collected a few from our graduate students.

The Talks:

June 6th, 2008 The Life Cycle of Giant Molecular Clouds, Charlotte Christensen
May 2008 Implications of Mid-Infrared Surveys for a Populations of Obscured Quasars/AGN, Daryl Haggard
March 17th, 2008 Physical Processes in Solar and Stellar Flares, Eric Hilton
June 7th, 2007 HII Regions and Physics of Photo-Dissociation Regions: Theory vs. Observations, Stephanie Morris Gogarten
February 28th, 2007 The Radio-IR Correlation: Coupling of Thermal and Non-Thermal Processes, Amy Kimball
