Title: Extrasolar Giant Planets and Brown Dwarfs:
New Frontiers of Stellar Spectroscopy
Abstract:
I will briefly review the first decade of studying
subsolar mass objects, namely brown dwarfs and
extrasolar giant planets, with emphasis on physics and
chemistry of their atmospheres, their predicted spectra,
and a comparison of theory with observations.
On the side of extrasolar giant planets, I will emphasize
recent observational highlights, namely planetary transits
and first deduced spectra of extrasolar planets using
secondary eclipses, together with our modeling results.
On the brown dwarf side, I will concentrate on
a recent concentrated effort to explain the observed
spectra and colors in the transition between the newly introduced
spectroscopic types L and T, and the role of uncertainties
in the cloud formation physics.
