Press: Pre-MAP in the News!
Cohort 1 students Harkirat Sohi and James Bushong contributed to a project on mapping the metals of stars in the Milky Way.
Pre-MAP is profiled in the UW Transfer e-newsletter.
Reaching for the stars, The Daily (UW Student Newspaper). Reprinted in SPECTRUM, the newsletter of the Committee on the Status of Minorities in Astronomy.
Joel Leigh, a member of Pre-MAP Cohort 3, shares his knowledge of astrophotography with the general public.
Pre-MAP students discover 1,300 asteroids! See articles at UW News and MSNBC, and watch a video interview.

Presentations and Reports
Pre-MAP: A Case Study in Evaluating Astronomy Diversity Efforts, in SPECTRUM, the newsletter of the Committee on the Status of Minorities in Astronomy
Seminar Instructor Daryl Haggard gave a talk on Pre-MAP at the January 2007 meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers in Seattle. Available in ppt or pdf.
Report on the first two years of Pre-MAP to the Office of Minority Affairs.
Presentation for prospective students.

Resources for UW Astronomy Majors
Undergraduate Astronomy Majors page - information about how to
major in astronomy, course requirements, and useful links for majors.
"Page O'Announcements" from our Program Coordinator. Also contains the time schedule for the current academic year, hints on getting into grad school, and helpful links.
Undergraduate Astronomical Institute (UAI) - a group for
undergraduates pursuing research in astronomy at UW.
Manastash
Ridge Observatory - the UW Astronomy Department's nearest
telescope, for use exclusively for UW undergraduate and graduate
students.
Radio
Astronomy Group - a great group of undergraduates building their own
radio telescope.
Theodore
Jacobsen Observatory - located at the north end of campus, the
observatory houses an antique refracting telescope used primarily for
public outreach. It is staffed almost entirely by undergraduates who give
talks and operate telescopes.
Society of
Physics Students at UW - a student organization for physics and
astronomy majors.
University Resources
UW Freshman Interest
Groups - a program at the UW for incoming freshman to take classes
of common interest with a group of peers; great for helping people adjust
to the large university setting.
UW Office of Minority
Affairs and Diversity - offering programs and support for minorities at the UW.
Other Resources for Undergraduate Astronomers
What is an REU?
- REUs (Research Experience for Undergraduates) are paid summer research
opportunities available for interested undergraduates as early as the
summer after their freshman year. This site gives some background as to
what REUs are.
The AAS bulletin board for astronomy REU programs -
- a listing of summer astronomy research opportunities available through
the NSF's REU program.
National
Science Foundation's REU Directory - a listing of ALL summer
research opportunities available through the NSF's REU program.
NASA 2006 Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP)
- these are either ten-week Summer or 15-week Fall research experiences
at a NASA center. The USRP provides students with a technical mentor and
excellent hands-on experience. Students must be rising juniors or seniors
the spring before they participate.
Interesting Astronomy Sites
Astronomy
Picture of the Day - each day a new astronomy picture and caption
by a professional.
Hubble Heritage
Project - a gallery of the finest the Hubble Space Telescope has to
offer.
The
Sun, right now - frequently updated images of the sun from the SOHO
satellite.
Nick Strobel's Astronomy
Notes - a complete Astro 101 textbook online.
HyperPhysics
Concepts - a detailed concept map of all major concepts in physics and
astronomy.
