UAI Radio Astronomy Group Homepage

The Undergraduate Astronomical Institute (UAI) was created by a core group of upper-division astronomy and physics majors at the University of Washington for the purpose of encouraging independent research among undergraduates. Although, our telescope is small and limited by the electromagnetic interference in the Seattle area, we hope to be able to see radio emissions from the strongest radio sources in the sky, which include the Sun, Jupiter, and the galactic center.

Student Research

Outreach Activities

Undergraduates at the University of Washington are involved in a number of outreach activities: giving planetarium presentations on campus, giving public talks at the Campus Observatory, and visiting schools--on an individual basis and as part of Project AstroBio. Each year, around 5 undergraduate students get actively involved in Project AstroBio. Here we see Virginia Player talking to an elementary school class about astrobiology and the probability for life elsewhere in the solar system.

Theodor Jacobsen Observatory

Undergraduates at the University of Washington (astronomy majors as well as students just interested in astronomy) present talks on different topics every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month at the Jacobsen Observatory. If they are not giving the presentation, they may be volunteering for crowd control, for operating our new 5" telescope outside the observatory, or wherever else they are needed. As part of a Fall Quarter 400-level course, they learn how to give scientific talks and create a poster summarizing the content. These undergraduates may also choose to become involved in giving planetarium presentations to school groups.
