And colossuses (colossi?)

And occasionally clouds...

After getting my PhD, I moved to Hoboken, NJ which is 1 mile from what is now left of the the World Trade Center towers. I would look at them every day on the way to the train station. It was impossible to miss them actually, which makes their absense all the more eerie now. The ruins still smoke, and glow at night from the accumulated rescue equipment. Here is the current view from Hoboken. It is 3 in the morning, and note people keep the candles lit... The towers would have reached about to the top of this picture.

My first day back I went down to ground zero, sneaking in past distracted police, to view and smell and encounter the site and the chaos around it. It was the grimmest experience I have had in my life, some parts eerily artistic and some parts utterly horrible. Chills went down my spine, and I had a tight panic feeling in my chest. The wind kicked up dust storms of the pulverized towers and people. Papers were still blowing off the roofs of nearby buildings - I was afraid to pick one up and take it home...

Union Square was as spectacularly beautiful as the ruins were unreal...

I took a job a Bell Labs, part of Lucent Technologies, just as our economy went to hell. As part of cost cutting measures, they are replacing us all with robotic simulacra.
