From self-sufficient adventurers crossing African deserts, to middle aged couples touring New England with little more than a credit card; whether powering through states in a day, or meandering through a county for weeks, cycle-touring is a fantastic way to see new places. You can travel relatively fast and cheaply. You are unthreatening yet not worth mugging. You get dirty and tired so people tend to take pity on you and you get kick-ass legs too! Here are some rules of thumb I've learnt the hard way:

Never trust a driver's directions.
Drivers get worse near cities.
An hour's drive is roughly a day's ride.
Always carry at least one spare inner tube.
Listen to your body, lest you end up in the emergency ward.
Listen to your bike, lest it end up in a repair shop.

Below is a list of trips I've done so far. Most of these tours where done with my fine cromoly steed, the Millennium Falcon though there are a few in there that i did with Dreadnought. I've also prepared a packing list for long tours, and a hall of fame.
