Sunset Moon

It is sunset in the Northwest. You are overlooking Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains to the west. Let's pretend you come here every few days for a few weeks. Can you find the Moon?

[Day "0"]: It's a new moon. Why can't you see it? [Day "3"]: The moon is a "waxing crescent." If pictured in this image would it be seen a) to the upper right of the Sun (towards the NW), b) directly above the Sun (directly east), c) to the upper left of the Sun (towards the SW), or d) not at all since it had already set? [Day "7"]: What is the phase of the Moon and where would you look to see it? [Day "15"]: What is the phase of the Moon and where would you look to see it? Another week passes. You cannot find the Moon no matter how hard you look. Why not?

Answers 1 It is between the Earth and the Sun. 2 c 3 First Quarter; South 4 Full; East 5 Moon is in its 3rd qtr; it sets ~6 hours before the Sun does.
