The Pre-MAP Classes

Astronomy 102 - Introduction to Astronomy

(5 credit hours, Lectures TuTh 9:30 - 10:50AM, Sections MW 9:30 - 10:20AM)
This class provides an introduction to astronomy for students who are familiar with algebra, trigonometry, and high school physics. In addition to giving you background that you'll use in your astronomy research project, this class will fulfill either the Natural World (NW) or Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning (QSR) requirements for your bachelor's degree. You will need to sign up for both the lecture (section A) and a lab section (section AA). Spots are being reserved for Pre-MAP students.
Astro 102 is being taught by Professor Zeljko Ivezic. See the class home page.

Astronomy 192 - The Pre-MAP Seminar

(3 credit hours, MW 11:00AM - 12:20PM)
This class will introduce you to astronomy research and give you the tools you will need to pursue your research project. You will need an add code to register for this class, which we'll give you when you contact us.
Astro 192 is being taught by Phil Rosenfield.

What other classes should I take?

Pre-MAP is a lot like the UW Freshman Interest Group (FIG) program - you will be part of a small community of students with similar interests, taking two of your classes together. Because of the nature of our program, you cannot enroll in Pre-MAP and a FIG at the same time - there just isn't enough space in your schedule. A typical freshman schedule is three courses - two five-credit courses and a third course between 2 and 5 credits. (You make take up to 18 credits at a time, but only do this if you're really sure you want to take on that much work.) Astronomy 102 is 5 credits and the Pre-MAP seminar is 3 credits, so we recommmend one additional 5-credit class.* How do you decide which one to take?

Below are examples of different types of courses that you can take along with Pre-MAP. Click the 'Schedules' links to view all possible schedules for each course - there's even a 'register for this schedule' button for each one that will take you directly to the registration page! Schedules were compiled with UW's Schedule Finder. Clicking the course ids takes you to descriptions in the course catalog.

Satisfying General Education Requirements

If you're not sure what you want to major in, why not take a class that satisfies some of your general education requirements?

These are only a few options - you can search for more courses that fit with Pre-MAP using the UW's helpful General Education Requirement Course Search.

Getting started with a science major

If you know that you want to pursue a major in the physical sciences or engineering, we recommend that you register for the highest level math course for which you are eligible. See here for information on placement tests. You may also wish to begin a physics or chemistry sequence - for example, Physics 121 or Chemistry 142.
