What: This is a self contained course designed to introduce students to the basics of planetary astronomy. The main focus of this course will be the exploration of planetary surfaces, both by people and robots. A particular emphasis will be placed on the current wave of robotic explorers in our solar system.

Prerequisites: This class is designed to be an introduction to astronomy for students in the physical sciences or engineering. Topics similar to the 100 level Astronomy classes, but the approach uses more mathematics and physics. Prerequisite: PHYS 123.

Class Mailing List : I will be using the class list-serve (astr301a_sp09@u.washington.edu) during class. Please make sure to monitor your u.washington.edu email account or set it to forward email to the account you usually read.

Grading: The current plan is that there will be three short (about 40 minutes) quizzes, and about 5 homeworks during the quarter. The grades in the class will be based your participation in the class discussion, and the class work and the quizzes. The preliminary dates for the short quizzes are given on the front page. Please note they may change, but I will give you at least a weeks warning if I am going to change a quiz date.
